The design of this new home is responsive to our client’s emotional attachment to the site as the location of childhood memories and connection to family. Set on seven hectares with adjacent conservation bushland and ocean views, the design contends with significant constraints in the form of geotechnical slippage, three deep underground coal seams, bushfire regulations and conservation issues. The arrival is from the ridge above, with the house embedded into the site to acknowledge and emphasise the beauty of the greater landscape beyond. Outdoor living on the mid-level engages the house with its new terrain, the singular mass of the house providing protection from southerly winds. Solar energy generation, stormwater collection and onsite waste management are functional requirements for this family home.
