Established in 2010, Anthrosite (anthro-site or people and place) is a statement of intent about the values we place on a user-focused design that responds to our local climate, evolving culture, and the experience of place from the traditional lands of the Worimi and Awabakal peoples in Muloobinba. Newcastle, NSW.

Over the past decade, Anthrosite has solidified its reputation as a paragon of high-quality design and delivery in the realm of residential buildings. As we step into our second decade, we are a small but dedicated team, unwavering in our focus on creating architectural designs that are responsive to the occupants' needs and mindful of the environment.

We have come to understand that strong connections to the outdoors and the integration of buildings and landscapes are not just desirable, but essential for human comfort and health. We firmly believe in designing the entire site as a living space; a room is not simply defined by walls and a roof but by the environment it is part of.

Memorable architecture involves a spatial experience that is not just visual but multi-sensory. Our senses open our imagination. Our eyes reach, and our ears receive. We feel the temperature, textures, and surfaces. We smell the seasonal blooms and the rain on the horizon. Architecture should seek to be more than a physical structure; it should stimulate and engage all our senses.

Our experience has taught us that while we may be knowledgeable in a particular field, there is always more to learn. Life provides us with unique experiences that offer growth opportunities. As our world constantly changes, responding to design projects effectively requires flexibility. Instead of adhering to a static doctrine, we embrace evolution in response to various factors, such as global pandemics, experiences, ideas, materials, research, and technologies. All these elements contribute to creating living and working spaces that are not just physical structures, but environments that are rich in subtlety and depth, thus enhancing the lives of the people who use them.

At our studio, we believe in a collaborative approach that fosters trust and understanding throughout the design process. We view our clients as partners, and we are inspired by the opportunity to work within a team to find creative solutions to complex problems. Effective communication is a cornerstone of our process, whether it's through ongoing dialogue, hand sketches, computer-aided drawings, digital and physical models, or material prototyping. We are committed to using the most suitable medium to share ideas for approval, ensuring that our clients feel involved and valued every step of the way.

We are a small team of six: Directors Dana Hutchinson and Mark Spence and project leads Louise Eddie, Hannah Devine, Tegan Warris and Amelia Tedder. Our team is involved in every aspect of every project from inception to completion.

Our work has garnered recognition through publications and awards. We pride ourselves on producing architecture that enhances the lives of our clients and stands out as a leading design within our industry.
