Central to the experience of the Whitebridge house is the creation of a large covered outdoor living room – The Garden Room. Orientated to capture the native bushland and distant (filtered) ocean views. The Garden Room is arranged around an outdoor fireplace; the hearth of the home.
To ground the fireplace, in-situ concrete became the critical material framing up the split level floors. In the setout, the inclusion of plinths were detailed as built-in seating establishing a datum of 420mm above the finished floor level. To the fireplace a taper slab was detailed to accentuate the firebox and provide a recess for concealed uplighting.
Seeing the form boards finally being formed up is a very satisfying, albeit hold your breath moment!
